In the field of human medicine, radiology is critical to the understanding and effective practice of the art of diagnosis and treatment. It is basically the "eye" of medical science, which it uses to look inside the body and find out what is wrong with it. Recently, medical science uses radiology to treat even without opening up the body through exploratory laparotomy. In most developed countries today, radiology is central and the main focus of most noninvasive diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of many diseases acting as the eye that peers inside the body without cutting it open.
With his recently published book, "Radiology for Medical Students" Dr. Kenneth Chukwudi Eze, MBBS, FWACS, FMCR, of the Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus, Nigeria, has made an important contribution to the field of medical education, Radiology, and Medical profession. This book provides valuable information not only to medical students but to resident doctors and clinicians in different fields and with different experiences who wish to keep abreast of the current understanding of radiological diagnosis and treatment including complications and how to avoid acute angles.
The book contains 192 images, 33 diagrams and illustrations and eight tables. It has been divided into a preface and seven chapters. The preface provides the invaluable background information that most of the images were used for diagnosis and treatment of patients in Nigeria. Thus, this is a practical book based on experience of the author in different hospitals where he had worked and the imaging output of many Nigerian Radiologist who supplied some of the images. Of particular note are excellent labeling of plain films, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound images making the understanding highly simplified. The author's style is simple, smooth and logical. It is basically a world class book based on practical experience in Nigeria.
In the first chapter, the reader is taken through such vital areas as the required imaging modalities for the particular occasions, how to read a chest radiograph, conditions before chest radiographic interpretations, pneumonias, lung collapse, lung abscess, pulmonary edema, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, pulmonary embolism, chest tumor, and chest traumas. In all the topics discussed the author made use of simple terminologies and generous images and figures to throw more light on his points.
In the second chapter, dealing on the cardiovascular system, the measurement of the heart size and the different grades and types of heart enlargement are highlighted including the diseases that could cause them. Imaging diagnosis of heart failure is treated in the most simplified approach. Pericardial effusion and some congenital heart diseases are highlighted.
The third chapter includes images from 64 slice multi-detector CT of how blood vessel and their disease can be diagnosed without injection of dangerous drugs. It also dwells on the topic of Interventional radiology, which is the current rapidly advancing area of radiology.
In Chapter 4, "the musculoskeletal system" fracture, dislocations, osteomyelitis, rickets, bone changes of sickle cell anemia, bone tumors, and tuberculosis of the bones are discussed with many images and illustrations. Radiographic images of osteomyelitis are well-labeled to make the understanding effortless.
Chapter 5, urogenital system, comprises of obstetrics and gynecology and urology. The aspect of obstetrics ultrasound will be of interest to even obstetricians of repute as it carries the message in a clear and simple manner with vital images and texts that guarantee high understanding of the topic. Ectopic pregnancy, placenta previa, placenta accrete, and their imaging appearances are well-elucidated. Other areas include intrauterine fetal demise, intrauterine growth restriction, biophysical profile and imaging of infertility. The prostate, kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and their diseases are also discussed. In all these, there are adequate figures and illustrations.
In Chapter 6, the disease of the gastrointestinal tract and their imaging are highlighted with numerous images and diagrams. It includes diseases of the esophagus such as achalasia of the cardia, esophageal web, Zenker's diverticulum, esophageal varices, and strictures. It includes such topics as appearance of normal bowel gas pattern and how to read an abdominal radiograph, hematemesis including its causes and treatment, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, gall stones and gall bladder diseases, Hirschsprung's disease, intussusceptions, necrotizing enterocolitis, and pneumoperitoneum.
The Chapter 7 dwelt on the diseases of head and neck particularly those of the brain and the spinal cord. It made use of generous images of CT, and magnetic resonance imaging. Different types of stroke and their imaging appearances are discussed with simplified, easy to understand images. Other topics in this last chapter that draw attention using abundant images and illustrations are ventricular system of the brain, hydrocephalus, brain infections including HIV/AIDS, brain tumors, head injuries, and brain developmental anomalies.
In conclusion, "Radiology for Medical Students" is an engaging and engrossing book on a rapidly expanding aspect of medicine. This well-written compact book contains current and necessary information and is arranged in clear and readable format for orderly flow of thought. Abundant and generous up to date images and illustrations, which are mostly from a collection of the author and some radiologists in Nigeria are available in each chapter, rich enough to make this book an Atlas More Details of medical imaging. Reading through the topics and the variety of the information contained in this book, it can be passed as one of the rare medical books that suit every level of readers from medical students to residents and practicing clinicians. Typographical errors, which are common to book of this nature due to the high specialty are strikingly few and are expected to be cleaned up in subsequent editions. This book should be read by everyone in a clinical setting, attending to patients in one way or the other.
For parents, this book should be in a list of books to be purchased for medical students and allied fields right from the onset and it will aid in the accurate understanding of anatomy and physiology. Libraries across the country need many copies of the book to be current.
The book is dedicated to Professor S. B. Lagundoye, a foremost professor of Radiology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan who also helped to review it at early stages. The foreword was written by Professor G.O.G. Awosanya, Professor of Radiology at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, who correctly observed that "Accurate diagnosis forms the basis for successful treatment of patients."
Dr. Kenneth C. Eze certainly has made a breakthrough effort in the medical writing, medical education and establishing a basis for successful diagnosis and treatment of patients in Nigeria. This singular effort by the author is highly commendable and the book is recommended as a-must-read book for all those interested in the accurate knowledge of medicine or passing examinations with ease.
